Year-Round Harvest: Winter Garden Prep | Tuesday, October 21
Date: Tuesday, October 21 • 4-6 pm
One of the benefits of living in Zone 9 is the potential for a year-round growing season. As the days grow shorter and temperatures cool, this is the moment to transition your garden from summer abundance into fall and winter readiness. With the right strategies, your garden can keep producing while laying the groundwork for spring success.
In this workshop, Clare Reisman, an instructor at SRJC Shone Farm, will guide you through key seasonal conditions, planting choices, and soil-building techniques that help you work with the rhythms of the year.
In this workshop you’ll:
- Learn why fall is the best time to build soil health, add compost, and prevent disease by removing summer plant debris
- Explore crop selection and timing for the cooler months, including spinach, peas, garlic, and hardy flowers
- Gain a deeper understanding of the “Persephone period” and how day length impacts growth
- Discover the benefits of sowing cover crops and how they protect and enrich the soil
- Explore simple tools for extending the season, from frost covers to low tunnels
We’ll spend time focusing on garlic—one of the most rewarding fall plantings. You’ll learn how to separate bulbs, plant cloves, and consider timing for success. Everyone will take home several garlic varieties ready for planting in their own gardens and a tray of winter seedlings to jumpstart their cold-season gardens.
