Seed Starting Fundamentals | Tuesday, March 17
Date: Tuesday, March 17 • 4-6 pm
Starting your own seeds is one of the most satisfying ways to begin a garden season. In this practical, hands-on workshop with local farmer and educator Clare Riesman, you’ll learn when to sow, how to create the right conditions for germination, and how to care for seedlings so they grow strong and resilient.
We’ll begin with timing—what to sow now, how to read a planting calendar, and how to determine the right start date for different crops. From there, we’ll explore the principles of seed germination and early plant development, including light, moisture, temperature, and airflow.
In this workshop you’ll:
- Learn how to decide what to sow and when based on the season
- Understand seed germination and early seedling development
- Explore soil mixes, containers, fertility, and essential materials
- Learn when and how to use heat mats and humidity domes
- Practice proper sowing techniques, including seed depth and watering
- Learn how to manage light, irrigation, and ongoing seedling care
- Understand when and how to pot up young plants
Each participant will choose seeds and sow their own tray of starts during class.
You’ll leave with a tray of newly sown seedlings to grow at home, along with the knowledge and confidence to continue starting seeds throughout the season.
